ACTIVITIES
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION:
Frontier Indigenous network is a community based organisation that champions for the rights of women and other marginalised groups from the indigenous community of Sakuye and pastoralist communities of Degodia, Ajuran Sharmoge, Sheykal in Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Marsabit, Moyale and Garissa districts of northern kenya.
The organisation was formed by group of women from indigenous community of Sakuye and other Pastoralist communities in the region with view of preaching peace following series of inter-clan clashes that targeted the indigenous communities with aim of cleansing and driving them out of their cultural sites, sacred shrines and grazing area which had abundant pasture and water.
The women joined hand and convince other communities to stop attacking the indigenous communities. A peace deal was signed between the various communities in 2004-2005 and hence relative peace was achieved.
The women decided that they can use the same platform in addressing various problem affecting both indigenous and pastoralist communities in the remote north eastern region and they came up with idea of registering the network which brings women from various indigenous communities and those from pastoralist communities together.
MISSION:
FRONTIER INDIGENOUS NETWORK, mission is to enhance and maintain the capacity of indigenous peoples to protect their rights and participate in development through:
• information sharing, dissemination and networking• work on issues affecting the indigenous and minority peoples• socio-economic empowerment• promotion of human rights• cultural and environmental conservation• gender mainstreaming• addressing HIV/AIDS and related health problems
FRONTIER INDIGENOUS NETWORK works to address issues in the following areas:
1 environmental conservation
2 health, including HIV/AIDS
3 women’s rights and gender mainstreaming
4 mobile education by using a teacher and a camel
5 fundraising and income generation
6 cultural preservation
7 land rights
8 climate change education
9 peace building and cross border peace initiatives
10 human rights
11 women rights e.g S.G.B.V, F.G.M, SEXUAL REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHS E.T.C
12 WOMEN EMPOWERMENT AND TRAINING
13 BRINGING INDIGENOUS WOMEN UNDER ONE UMBRELLA
14 WATER PROJECTS
In order to address these issues, we engage in outreach programs, techniques for income generation, cultural preservation and sound environmental management are promoted, and methods of achieving gender equality and improving community health are discussed.
The network helps community to build solidarity, learn from each others’ activities and successes, and motivate each other.
Gender equity and women’s rights are one of the Networks,major programming areas, as indigenous women are a minority within a minority, and continue to be doubly marginalized. Through workshops and trainings on women’s rights, income generation and project development and management, indigenous women are able to learn about their human rights, learn how to manage and make money and run their own projects.
Frontier network also supports local initiatives to combating harmful cultural practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage.
NETWORK holds trainings on sexual and reproductive health, including HIV/AIDS, specifically for women.
Early childhood education is another important focus point, as it helps introduce young children to the world of education and helps them develop the skills that will be useful to them as they continue on through school. Early childhood education also gives women more free time for their own personal development.
The network also assists groups to create income-generating projects that will fund the building of schools or the purchase of school supplies.
